Roland and Marsha created this cute little doggie sculpture together. It does not require internal support. The cake was filled and stacked and then crumb coated with buttercream icing. The entire figure was covered and decorated with fondant.
Roland carved the cake to a flowing shape to represent a baby blanket and frosted the cake with buttercream icing. Blue "quilting" was airbrushed onto the icing. The baby shape was figured piped using buttercream icing and round tips. The icing was shaped and smoothed with a palette knife and damp art brushes. If you'd like to learn how to pipe this baby design, it is included in Roland's book Cake Sculpture & Sculptured Figure Piping.
Marsha has decorated this cake in the style of Joseph Lambeth of England, a prominent decorator circa 1920-1930. This style uses over piping, or stacking layer after layer of icing on one another, to achieve its unique look. See the close-up photo below to see how each row of icing is one layer less than the previous. Beveled top and bottom edges are another characteristic of this style of cake decorating. Traditional tops for this style of wedding cake would include many royal icing flowers, but here Marsha created a cocoa painting plaque for the top and added a wafer paper butterfly.
This is a close-up view of the bottom beveled, over-piped border. See Marsha's books for cake decorating including Cocoa and Chocolate Painting, Wafer Paper Uses, and Rolled Buttercream for Cake Decorating.
Roland piped these three character faces from buttercream. He used a skewer stick, palette knife, and art brushes to refine the features.
Marsha made this Dino/Dragon cake from two 8" rounds covered and decorated with fondant. It could be decorated to resemble any type of dinosaur or dragon.
Roland created this cake when a customer brought in a rubber chicken to use as a model (see top of photo). The rubber chicken on the cake was figure piped with buttercream icing and airbrushed to the proper color. It must have been an inside joke for the recipient! |
