|
1. A modular stand was created for
the specific sculpture. Layers of cake and buttercream icing were
stacked, sculpted, and crumb coated.
2. & 3. More layers of cake and icing were stacked and dowels and
cake boards were added every few layers for support.
4. A thin piece of tab board (thin cardboard) was attached to the
main support plate to give the coattail dimensional realism.

5. More cake was added. The head and
shoulder areas were sculpted.
6. A full crumb coat of thinned
buttercream icing was added quickly to preserve the freshness of the
cake.
7. The face was created from
flesh-toned buttercream icing. The likeness was captured freehand by
using photos as a reference.
8. The face was piped, shaped with a
palette knife, and smoothed with special art brushes.

9. Details of the clothing and hair
were were added using appropriately colored buttercream icing.
10. Buttons, lapels, the collar,
etc. were piped of buttercream icing icing.
11. The tie was added in the same
manner.

12. Moving the finished sculpture
was done very carefully.
13. A finished life-sized cake
sculpture is very often the subject of attention from television and
news media, which was the case here.

Close-up Photos
These photos show the details of the face and hands. The hands, fingernails, and veins were piped and shaped with buttercream icing. All of the details were done freehand.
